Barcode vs. Flatbed Scanning
Understanding how each scanning method works is critical for accurate data capture.
Barcode Scanning
- Reads the encoded data on the back of the ID (typically a PDF417 barcode)
- Fast and highly accurate when the barcode is readable
- Does not capture an image of the ID
Flatbed Scanning
- Uses OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to extract text from the ID
- Captures a full image of the ID
- May be less accurate if the image quality is poor or lighting/glass conditions are not ideal
When to Use Each
- Use barcode scanning for quick, reliable data capture
- Use flatbed scanning when you need an image or when the barcode is unreadable
