Why Isn't My Scanner Reading This ID?
A step-by-step guide covering the most common reasons an ID fails to scan.
1. Dirty or Damaged Glass
Symptoms
- ID not detected
- “Oversized ID” error
- Cropped or misaligned scans
- Blurry or inconsistent images
Cause
Debris, smudges, or scratches on the scanner glass can interfere with how the device detects and crops the ID. In some cases, damaged glass can distort the scan entirely.
Resolution
- Inspect the glass for:
- Dirt or dust
- Fingerprints or smudges
- Scratches or physical damage
- Clean the glass using a microfiber cloth and appropriate glass cleaner.
- Dry the surface completely before use.
- If the glass is very scratched and damaged please contact patronscan support for replacement glass.
Note:
If you are receiving an “Oversized ID” error, thoroughly clean the glass. Even small obstructions can cause the scanner to misread the ID boundaries and result in improper cropping.
